THE BACKROAD JOURNAL / FIELD GEAR / 6-MINUTE READ
By Bark & Backroad
Quick take: Backroad Field Gear expands Bark & Backroad with outdoor clothing, practical carry options, tactical utility gear and camp equipment for the people holding the leash, loading the vehicle, setting camp and sharing the trail.
Dogs remain at the center of what we do. This new trail recognizes something every dog-led adventure already makes clear: the person behind the plan needs dependable gear, too.
At a glance
- Men’s Field Gear brings together trail-ready layers, camp shirts, utility pants and outerwear.
- Women’s Field Gear offers practical layers and trail clothing for dog walks, camp mornings and days on the road.
- Tactical Adventure Gear covers human carry, organization and utility equipment for trails, campsites and vehicles.
- Camping Gear adds useful camp lighting, sleep systems, kitchen organization and field tools.
Why Field Gear belongs at Bark & Backroad
A trail day starts before the trailhead. Someone checks the forecast, fills the water, loads the dog gear, finds the map and makes room in the vehicle. At camp, someone keeps the leash clear of the stove, places the dog bed where it will stay dry and looks for the headlamp after sunset.
Backroad Field Gear is built around that person.
This is not a separate world from dog adventure. It is the human side of the same outing. The right shirt, layer, pack, organizer or lantern should make it easier to focus on the dog, the route and the time outside together. We are choosing pieces for real use around leashes, muddy paws, open tailgates, cold mornings and changing plans.
Field note: Start with the outing you actually take. A neighborhood trail walk, a one-night campsite and a long backroad weekend need different clothing and equipment. Buy for the job, the conditions and the way you travel.
Meet the four Field Gear collections
Men’s Field Gear
Men’s Field Gear focuses on clothing that can move from the drive to the trail and back to camp. The collection includes plaid field shirts, utility pants, fleeces, wind layers and jackets with practical shapes and pockets.
The live Men’s Waffle-Knit Half-Zip is one current example. Its stand collar and half-zip design make it an easy layer to open when the pace picks up or close when the campsite cools down. As with every clothing purchase, check the current size chart and product details before choosing a variant.
Women’s Field Gear
Women’s Field Gear brings together flannels, cargo and convertible pants, fleeces, wind layers and camp-ready pieces. The goal is a useful wardrobe for early dog walks, trail miles, road stops and the quieter work of camp.
The live Women’s Packable Trail Wind Jacket is a lightweight hooded layer that folds into its matching pouch. It can ride in a daypack or vehicle for breezy walks and exposed trail sections. Check the current product page for colors, sizing and availability.
Some versatile pieces may appear in both the men’s and women’s collections when they serve both browsing paths. The collection name helps organize the store; the product page provides the details needed to choose the right fit.
Tactical Adventure Gear
Tactical Adventure Gear is for people. It includes compact organizers, utility pouches, slings, field packs, gloves, emergency covers and practical tools intended for human carry or camp and vehicle use.
The live Pocket EDC Organizer, for example, gives small essentials a defined place instead of leaving them loose in a larger bag. That kind of organization can matter when one hand is on a leash and the other is reaching for a light, keys or a small tool.
This collection is distinct from Dog Adventure & Tactical Gear. The dog collection is where you will find canine harnesses, collars, dog packs and related equipment. Tactical Adventure Gear covers human equipment. Keeping those jobs separate makes it easier to choose gear for the correct user.
Camping Gear
Camping Gear supports the shared campsite: lighting, sleeping pads, camp kitchen organization, cook sets, field tools and other pieces that help turn a parking spot or tent site into a workable base.
The live Dimmable Rechargeable Camp Lantern adds adjustable light for camp tasks and the evening wind-down. A lantern does not replace the light you carry away from camp, but it can give the main setup a consistent place for cooking, sorting gear and settling the dog.
Shop by the job the gear needs to do
Field Gear makes the most sense when each item has a clear role. Before adding a piece, ask where it will be used and what problem it should solve.
- For the trail: Prioritize movement, access to essentials and a layer you can adjust without unpacking everything.
- For camp: Think about light, sleep, food preparation, dry storage and the space your dog needs to settle.
- For the vehicle: Keep frequently used items reachable while protecting room for the dog, water and safe loading and unloading.
- For everyday walks: Choose pieces that are easy to grab, comfortable with leash handling and suitable for the conditions outside your door.
Our existing Journal guides still cover the dog side of those decisions. Use the complete trail checklist to plan a dog hike, the camping with dogs packing guide for a campsite, and the dog road trip checklist before a longer drive. Field Gear fills in the clothing, organization and camp equipment around those plans.
What comes next in the Journal
This introduction opens a more focused set of human outdoor guides. The first, scheduled for November 6, covers cold-weather layering for dog walks, hikes and camp mornings.
Future Field Gear topics will stay specific so they add to the Journal instead of repeating it. A camp setup guide should explain how to arrange human tools, lighting and clothing around the dog’s sleep and feeding space. A daypack guide should focus on access and organization rather than repeat the dog trail checklist. Vehicle gear coverage should show where human and camp equipment fits around the dog, not retell the existing road trip articles.
That same standard will guide the collections. We will keep reviewing product status and availability, and we will only feature a product in the Journal when its live page is ready for readers.
For the people behind the adventure
Backroad Field Gear gives the person behind the leash a better place to start. Browse by the outing, choose equipment with a clear job and keep the dog at the center of the plan.
The collection is new, but the purpose is familiar: make it easier to leave the pavement, share the trail and come home ready for the next backroad.
From the backroad
Good human gear earns its place by making the shared adventure simpler, more comfortable and easier to organize.
